Ski & Golf This Spring, From Just $725, at Whistler

It's been a dry winter in many parts of the USA, but that hasn't been the case out in British Columbia, where the Whistler Resort is located. They've had above-average snowfall, so the slopes will still be skiable from April through about early June. The canny Canadians have connived to arrange a package as low as $725 per person (based on double occupancy) that includes round-trip airfare between New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and many other East Coast cities to Vancouver, plus seven nights in a hotel room or condo, a six-day ski lift ticket, transfers, and all taxes. (That's US dollars, naturally.)

Similar moderately-priced packages are available to Whistler from other US cities, just phone and ask. The package is offered by Skican, that nation's largest ski-tour operator. They have been in business more than 30 years, and are able to negotiate the best rates directly from resorts, cutting out the middleman and lowering the costs.

Whistler likes to call itself North America's Number One ski resort and snowboard destination, and you will probably believe this when you get to the site, just two hours' north of Vancouver by car. There are more than 7,000 acres of skiable terrain, over 200 trails, and a dozen huge bowls. The lift system (there are 33 of them) includes three gondolas and 12 high-speed quads.

If skiing isn't enough to keep you busy, you could try snowshoeing, sleigh rides, heli-skiing, dog sledding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. There are plenty of lodgings, restaurants, bars and shops to choose from. In April, you could attend the Ski & Snowboard Festival from the 12th to the 21st. In May or June, you can combine skiing with golf, taking turns on alternate days. There are special Ski/Golf Holiday packages also available from Skican, described in detail on their Web site.
