Hawaii can be a notoriously expensive destination, so when we came across this special from Expedia (tel. 800/EXPEDIA; www.expedia.com), we took note. If you can book and travel soon, you can fly roundtrip to Hawaii and stay for four nights from $486. The promotion carries a March 31 booking deadline for travel that departs by March 31. Here's the nitty gritty: The flights are on Hawaiian Airline and the packages are based on round-trip, nonstop flights for travel Thursday through Monday with double occupancy stays in a hotel that's at least two and a half stars. When you go through the reservation process, Expedia helpfully shows you what you're saving by booking the flight and hotel together.
The lowest advertised price of $486 is based on Los Angeles departures to Honolulu, but other cities are possible too. They're all West Coast gates, however: Las Vegas, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle. You can fly from Seattle to Honolulu from $574 or Seattle to Maui from $607, or San Diego to Maui from $510, or Phoenix to Honolulu from $542. Prices reflect four nights of accommodations. A sample trip from Las Vegas to Oahu, for example, comes up with $706 for travel February 27-March 2 for the economy-minded Aqua Continental, located within three blocks of Waikiki Beach. For a little bit more money -- $785 per person -- you can stay at the Castle Ocean Resort Hotel in Waikiki, which is near a family-friendly beach. It's possible to go for something even more expensive, of course. If you want a hotel with more amenities, such as a spa, the Hyatt Regency is priced for this particular trip at $1,468. Although that's not inexpensive by any means for four days, your vacation is what you make it.
