Smart Deal of the Week: Turkey in the Fall from $1,030 Per Person

With its four-night deal to Istanbul, Gate 1 Travel wants travelers to look to the eastern extremes of Europe for deals this summer and fall.

We all know how expensive Europe is now and we also know the dollar isn't going far in many other places, either -- my monthly column on this website ("Where Does the Dollar Do Best?") attests to that. Gate 1 Travel (tel. 800/682-3333; www.gate1travel.com) wants you to look for deals in Europe's eastern extremes, namely Turkey. The company is offering an independent six-day trip to Istanbul from $749 per person (taxes and fees increase the rate on many departures by $280), based on double occupancy and New York-Istanbul roundtrip airfare. The price also includes airline fuel surcharges, daily breakfast, four nights of accommodations at the four-star Hotel Yigitalp, which is situated in the city's historic center. Airport taxes and departures fees, which will add on about $120 more, are not included. It is also possible to select other accommodation, such as the Orsep Royal Hotel, from an additional $10 per person, or the Nippon Hotel in Taksim Square, which starts from an additional $130 per person.

The lowest advertised price is based on departures on September 11 and throughout October. Other departures, such as September 18, are priced from $829; September 25 is priced at $869, and September 4 is priced from $959. But if you want to travel this summer, the price is higher: from $1,289 for departures now through August 28. Or you can choose your own departure date -- opt for the flexible package -- but know that the price will fluctuate accordingly depending on the dates of travel.

So, why would you want to go to Istanbul? Turkish baths? Turkish fast food in the Ortakoy neighborhood? How about living examples of ancient religion and architecture, and a city that exemplifies the bridge between Europe and Asia? To take it all in, before you depart, book optional half-day sightseeing Historical Istanbul tour for $52 per person through Gate 1. It takes in the essential stops, such as the landmark Basilica St. Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, the Grand Bazaar, and the Roman Hippodrome.
