A bargain hunter's dream--the south seas in the winter, cheap as sand. Tahiti Vacations is taking advantage of underbooked flights on Air Tahiti Nui to lower prices on five-night air and hotel combos. These are for two specific departure dates in December to Tahiti and Moorea, and they won't be available for very long.

The first available departure date is December 8 with a return on the 12th. For $599 (before taxes) you'll be staying at the Sofitel Maeva Beach on the island of Tahiti, for $699 at the Moorea Pearl Resort or $799 at the Moorea Beachcomber Intercontinental. All packages mentioned here include roundtrip air from Los Angeles on Air Tahiti Nui, interisland air travel for the Moorea packages, hotel (and in air-conditioned rooms), all transfers and baggage handling, floral lei greeting and traditional shell lei upon departure. The prices are per person based on double occupancy. The single supplement runs prohibitively high--$280 for the Maeva Beach and the Pearl Resort, $380 for the Intercontinental. Airport taxes and security fees are an additional $63.

You can stay on for extra nights, at additional charge, with returns on December 13, 14, 20 or 23, all in 2002.

The second package is for departure on December 15, 2002, returning December 20, 2002. You stay for five nights at the Sofitel Maeva Beach for $699, at the Moorea Pearl Resort for $769 or the Moorea Beachcomber Intercontinental for $889. Extra nights are available for this package, as well, with return on December 23, 2002.

Although Tahiti itself is fascinating, you may enjoy a stay on Moorea a bit more as it is less populated and somewhat less developed. To compare the two, do a little research on our just-update coverage of the islands in our free, online destinations section. Just click "Tahiti" and "Moorea" at the top of this article to go there.
