To counter some grumbling about Hawaii's often higher prices, savvy entrepreneurs like the Hanalei Colony Resort, on Kauai, are offering discounted rates, such as their six-week winter high season cutting of prices by nearly 50%, bringing Garden View units down to $99 a night (from the usual $180).
Hanalei Colony is a quiet little resort (48 two-bedroom condo units, low-rise, on five acres) on Kauai's north shore, near the end of the road in Ha'ena, the island's northernmost town, in fact. It sits on a long curve of golden beach with a backdrop of gorgeous mountains (this is where the movie, Bali Hai, was filmed, after all).
Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen and private lanai, with no television, stereo or phone to distract you. The resort does have a swimming pool if you tire of the ocean and beach, a whirlpool spa, barbecue and picnic areas, a guest Laundromat and twice-weekly maid service. Guests are invited to a weekly free continental breakfast and an afternoon mai tai party, and there's a Wednesday night luau for a fee.
If the Garden View unit seems inadequate in your mind, opt for the $125 per night Ocean View unit (usually $205) or the $175 Ocean Front Premium unit (usually $300). These discounts require a three-night minimum stay. Valid dates for the program: January 4 through February 20, 2003.
Kauai beaches are world famous for their beauty, with opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, fishing and sunbathing. Near the resort are sports facilities for sailing, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. There are also humpback whales in the water out there, so be on the lookout. A short drive away you will find access to golf, horseback riding and tennis, as well as shopping and dining out.
