September 1, 2003 -- The publishers of a guidebook about Florida for travelers using wheelchairs and other assistive devices are offering a 20% discount to readers of this Newsletter who buy the book this month only. The regular price is $24.95, the discounted tag is $19.96.

Wheelchairs on the Go: Accessible Fun in Florida is a 424-page guidebook crammed with detailed descriptions of accessible accommodations (condos, houses, B&Bs, hotels, campgrounds, etc.), recreation (from adaptive golf and certain beaches that loan special beach wheelchairs, to sailing and scuba), theme parks (with ride-by-ride descriptions of access), attractions, historic sites, and fishing or hunting. And that's just for starters.

In the beaches section, you'll learn of ramps to the sand, roll-under picnic tables, lifeguards and ADA restrooms. In the theme parks listings, there is information on how to avoid long waits, steep ramps, as well as hints on special programs and separate entrances. The lodging section includes details such as the height of beds, roll-under sinks, roll-in showers, pools with lifts, and more.

There is information on wheelchair sports, which includes basketball, tennis, bowling, rugby, archery, fencing, even horseback riding and water skiing. The fishing and hunting section include information on charters that can accommodate anglers in wheelchairs or lodges with adaptive equipment for hunters.

Michelle Stigleman (whose husband, Randy, is a paraplegic) and Deborah Van Brunt wrote the guide after more than four years of researching the entire state. They avoid using the terms "disabled" and "handicapped," preferring the phrase "people using canes, walkers and wheelchairs."

You can preview the book at www.wheelchairsonthego.com. To get the special discount, you should mention Frommers.com and order by phone or mail. Please add $3 for shipping outside Florida or $1.40 for sales tax within Florida. You can contact the company directly at:
