July 16, 2003 -- This time of year, the temperatures rise and the prices drop throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. Case in point: all-inclusive Avalon Resorts are reducing rates to as low as $66 per night per person -- plus the chain is waving the cost for a fifth night when you pay for four nights now extended through December 23.

At the Avalon Excalibur in Acapulco, Mexico's slickest resort city, the $66 per person per night gets you lodging (two persons per room), all meals (some restrictions apply), domestic alcoholic beverages, tips, taxes and transfers. If you book a family plan, children 12 and under stay free in the same room while accompanied by two paying adults, utilizing existing bedding. The kids eat free while accompanied by a paying adult for meals of equal or lesser value. Airfare, needless to say at these prices, is not included.

Different prices go with Avalon resorts in other locations. Down in Panama at the Avalon Grand, all-inclusive prices start at $72 per person per night. Back in Mexico, the Avalon Grand in Cancun wants $98 per person per night and up, while the nearby Avalon Reef Club on Isla Mujeres (Mexico's nicest big island) has prices starting at $105 per person, per night.

Highest-priced of the five Avalon properties is the Baccara, also in Cancun, where per room costs start at $141 on a European Plan basis. The latter is for room only, but you do get your tips, taxes and transfers taken care of at $20 per person extra.
