Lying some 30 miles off-shore from Cape Cod, the island of heaths, cranberry bogs and sand is too-oft passed over for more it's faster paced sister, Martha's Vineyard--favorite spot of the Dubya-maligned "white-wine-swilling crowd." And we think that's just fine. Now those of the over-50 set can plan a quiet getaway with half-off rooms at the dripping-with-history Harbor House Village.

Recently reopened after a major renovation, the inn boasts a 130-year history starting from the Nantucket's heyday as the world's major whaling center--think Moby Dick. These special "50/50" rates start as low as $60 a night and can run as much as $135--down from the usual $120-$270 range--and are valid for stays from September 15 through December 1, 2002. That's a perfect time frame to take in the soon to be changing fall colors, the island's Nantucket Arts Festival (October 1-7) or the chowder eating contest on October 19. Still in time for the deal is the Nantucket Noel, starting just after Thanksgiving. All in all, a nice time to be there.

To qualify, you must present proof of age (a driver's license will do just fine), but only one person per room must be over 50. Rates are per-room, per-night and are good for single travelers as well. For additional details or to book a room, just call toll-free 866/325-9300 and tell 'em Frommer's sent you.
