Dominican Republic based Viva, that well-known chain of modestly priced resorts, has a double promotion going on for now and autumn. They are offering up to 10% off rates in three of their resorts through August 31. The second scheme, valid from September 1-December 23 and only for those who are 50 and older, offers a 15% discount on rack rates, 5% off all excursions and a free upgrade to an ocean view room, if one is available. Modest deals, yes, but on top of already moderate prices, a fair bargain. A summer room for two at their all-inclusive Dominicus Beach resort in La Romana, Dominican Republic, should cost $162 per night instead of $180.

And remember, all-inclusive (applies all the time at Viva Resorts) means the room, all meals and snacks, unlimited beverages including cocktails and wine, daily activities and fitness programs, unlimited non-motorized water sports (plus lessons), a Kid's Club, live entertainment every night, all taxes, surcharges, gratuities and more are all part of the price.

Two other properties are participating in this promotion--the Dominicus Palace, also in La Romana, with a per person rate of $90 (down from $100); and the Viva Fortuna Beach, on Grand Bahama Island in The Bahamas, where the per person rate will be $115 (was $122). Rates, of course, are based on the double occupancy.

Moreover, children under 12 are allowed to stay, play and eat for free when sharing a room with two paying adults (maximum of two kids per room), so this definitely should peak the interest of families.

The Golden Incentives program involves the savings mentioned earlier, and only one of the persons sharing a room need be 50 or older.

A few samples of their all-inclusive per person price per night, including the 15 percent discount, follows:

  • $72 at the Viva Dominicus Beach
  • $81 at Viva Dominicus Palace
  • $75 at the Viva Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta
  • $94 at Viva Maya in Playacar
  • $100 at Viva Azteca in Playacar
  • $92 at Viva Fortuna Beach
