November 14, 2003 - Despite beliefs to the contrary, getting paid as a travel writer is not as glamorous as you might think. Rewarding, yes, but their is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes. To discover the nuts and bolts of the craft, we refer you to a travel writing workshop being held down in balmy Key West this coming February. The seminar is organized by the Heritage House Museum & Garden, a charming compound that includes the island's second-oldest house, the Robert Frost Cottage (where the poet lived in winter), and a luscious garden with the town's best collection of orchids. The teacher is our own Bob Fisher, a contributor to this website.
Of the three sessions being offered, the first is completely filled, but a few seats are still open for the second and third classes held February 13-15 and February 20-22, respectively. Time will be allotted on the 16 and 23 for individual tutoring, if desired. Fisher will present a Travel Writing 101 Workshop in the museum gardens and in the Frost Cottage; classes are capped at 14 students per session. The cost is just $275 for two days of instruction (four hours per day, Saturdays and Sundays), an evening reception (on Friday) and optional tutoring and critique sessions (between classes or on the Monday following).
Students are responsible for their own transportation to Key West and accommodations while there. The Heritage House website gives current recommendations for moderately priced lodging and other helpful information about this ever-popular winter getaway spot, plus you can also check our extensive list of recommended lodgings in our online coverage of Key West starting here, www.frommers.com/destinations/keywest.
All events take place at Heritage House, 410 Caroline Street, Key West FL 33040. You can register online at www.heritagehousemuseum.org, or contact them at either 305/296-3573 or heritagehouse@aol.com.
Are you an alumnus/alumna of Bob Fisher's writing programs? We'd love to hear about your experiences. Post your story on our Message Boards.
