I just got back from a business trip to Vegas. It's too easy to knock the place, so let me tell you about three experiences that I liked. One was a hike through Red Rock Canyon, less than 40 minutes by car from the airless casinos. Most larger hotels have their own car rental desks, andit's easy to rent wheels for the day. This is John Wayne country (does anyoneremember John Wayne?)--a world of cactus and twisted red rock. You can drivethe panoramic 13-mile scenic route and stop for a picnic at tables along theway, or you can go for a gorgeous hike; maps are available at the VisitorCenter.

Second on my list is dinnerat Memphis Championship Barbecue, east of the strip. Most of the big-namedesigner restaurants in Vegas are terribly overpriced and not very good, atleast not for the cost (think $30 entrees). Of course, getting to the MemphisBarbecue by cab will set you back $20, but it's an adventure in local color, andyou'll escape the tourists. Besides, who wouldn't spend $20 for meat cookedover mesquite applewood, seasoned with a sweet vinegar-based sauce--so tender,it falls off the bone, just as it's supposed to.

My third favoriteexperience? O at the Bellagio or Mystere at Treasure Island, bothby Cirque du Soleil. Frommer's Las Vegas 2002 says it's a toss upbetween these two, for the best show in Vegas. I agree. Both must be seen to bebelieved. You don't need to roll the dice to know this is as classy as entertainmentgets--anywhere.
