Seattle may be the balmy winter capital that gave us the Grunge look and Starbucks, but it's a lot more, especially if you like fine dining, good shopping and a lively nightlife. While much of the country's northern latitudes are freezing, Seattle is in the midst of one of its warmest winters on record, with temperatures frequently above 50 and the sun shining a lot. All this is made much more appealing as the city fathers & mothers roll out their 12th annual Super Saver Package, offering up to 50% off regular room rates at 45 participating downtown hotels.

The rates range from $55 to $175 per room, and can be booked by phoning 800/535-7071 (from the U.S. or Canada) or going online to www.seattlesupersaver.com. The program runs from now through March 31, 2003.

Activities during January include the Seattle International Boat Show and the new exhibit at that fantastic "museum," the Experience Music Project, called "Disco: A Decade of Saturday Nights." In February, you can see The Producers in case you couldn't get tickets at the New York showing, or listen to Bellini's Norma at the Seattle Opera. There's also the Northwest Flower & Garden Show this month. During March, the city has its popular Dine Around Seattle, 25 for $25 program, which offers great deals at 25 top restaurants (and Seattle is a really good dining out town).

Also in January are three other theatrical presentations and the Pacific Northwest Ballet. In February, add on more theater at two venues, including the perennial favorite, My Fair Lady. In March, the Seattle Repertory Theater presents Romeo & Juliet, and Les Mis comes to town as well.

Among the hotels participating are the Travelodge by the Space Needle $55 (down from $109), Springhill Suites by Marriott Downtown $69 (down from $149) and the top of the line Alexis, $154 (down from $295).

Note that the Super Saver toll free phone reservation line is open from 8:30 to 5 (Pacific Time), Monday through Friday and from 10 to 2 on weekends. At least one overnight stay is required, and you must book through the Super Saver line or Web site to get the discount.
