April 14, 2003 -- You can always count on a surprise when you visit the West, especially when you're looking for a place to sleep. In addition to rustic cabins and tepees, you can also slip between slick silk sheets in a Beverly Hills-esque glamour resort or doze away in a themed bedroom chockfull o' stuffed animal heads, mounted horns and the like.

Here are just a couple of low-priced samples on sale right now in the Western faves of Seattle and Las Vegas:

Out on Washington State's beautiful Olympic Peninsula, the historic Lake Quinault Lodge and Kalaloch Lodge have both announced special promotions offering lodging for two nights at the price of one through June 12, 2003. The deal at Lake Quinault Lodge is valid for stays Sundays through Thursdays and is subject to availability. Prices per room range from $89 up to $156 per night. Located in the heart of the Olympic National Forest, the lodge is a cozy, yet impressive, place, and you can stay in one of the lakeside or a non-view Main Lodge room. For more information to or to make reservations, phone them at 800/562-6672 or go to www.visitlakequinault.com.

At the Kalaloch Lodge, which sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, you reserve a rustic log cabin, pay for the first night and get the second one free. Also good from Sunday through Thursdays and subject to availability, this offer equals a value of up to $124. This spot is the only year-round lodging in Olympic National Park. For more information or to make reservations, phone 866/525-2562 or go to www.visitkalaloch.com.

About three hours from downtown Seattle, the Olympic Peninsula encompasses three distinctly different ecosystems: rugged glacier-capped mountains, more than 60 miles of wild Pacific coast and the Northwest's largest remaining undisturbed old-growth and temperate rain forest. About 95% of its land is designated wilderness area, and populated with herds of Roosevelt elk and thousands of other wildlife species.

Moving out of the rainforest and into the desert, you can book a room at the Imperial Palace, located right in the heart of The Strip in Las Vegas, for just $44 a night on weekdays and $74 on weekends, with either one or two persons occupying the place. This is a short-notice deal since you have to book by April 16, 2003 for stays through the end of April. If you pick the Sunday through Thursday option, you get a $50 dine-around bonus. There's a minimum two-night stay, and a 9% hotel tax is not included.

Part of the deal includes free use of the health and fitness center, free pass to the 250 + automobile collection, and twofers for the stage show, "Legends in Concert." For reservations, phone 800/634-6441 or visit www.imperialpalace.com and ask for the "Spring in Your Step" offer.
