Sultry Summer Deals for St. Kitts: Air and Five Nights' Stay From $760

St. Kitts, a 68-square-mile island in the West Indies, typically offers a lush, tropical Caribbean vacation experience that many travelers find resembles the South Pacific. If you can stand the heat and humidity, at least while you're out and about, then summer is a great time to visit, as rates are reduced.

The 10th annual St. Kitts Music Festival runs June 29-July 2, and features all kinds of Caribbean, jazz and pop music, including Beenie Man, Air Supply, Yolanda Adams, reggae artist Shaggy bands. American Airlines Vacations (tel. 800/321-2121; www.aavacations.com) is offering a couple of specials to St. Kitts. The highly rated St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino is available for $1,227 for travel through May 31, $1,391 for travel June 1- August 21, and drops to a low $760 for August 22-October 31. The prices reflect a five-night stay in standard rooms, airfare and the offer earns you up to 1,000 AAdvantage bonus miles if you book online. The deal even extends deep into the fall; the booking deadline is December 17 for travel by December 22. The resort is located ten minutes from the airport and faces the beach.

The Angelus Resort and Spa (tel. 869/466-6224; www.angelusstkitts.com) is an all-suite property with "summer sale" rates available through December 23, starting at $119 per night for a resort view studio suite with a private balcony or a terrace, including full American breakfast daily. The ocean view room is priced at $159. Rates do not include tax or service charges. The resort's rooms overlook Frigate Bay. Their restaurant, Le Caribe, tries to consistently offer local, in-season produce and free-range, organic food whenever possible.

Through December 19, Bird Rock Beach Hotel (tel. 869/465-8914; www.birdrockbeach.com) is offering a low nightly rate for a superior single or double room, starting from $85, per night, based on double occupancy. One child under age 12 can share a room with parents for free. Taxes and service charges are not included. The resort has one, two and three bedroom suites, making it a great place for families. The hotel has its own scuba center, as the waters nearby provide great diving opportunities. However, if you're interested in packaging this with airfare, a search using ELeisurelink (tel. 888/801-8808; www.eleisurelink.com) for a late May departure, including airfare from Newark to St Kitts, comes in at $572 per person for three nights, round-trip tickets and all taxes, and a superior room. (You can also add on airport transfers for an additional $26 per person.)

Frigate Bay Resort (tel. 800/266-2185; e-mail info@frigatebay.com; www.frigatebay.com) is offering a golf special, starting at $1,575 per room, per week, based on double occupancy, from now through October 1. The package includes accommodations for two for seven nights, in either a bay view or ocean view room full American breakfasts every day, an island tour, and two rounds of golf per person. And you'll be welcomed with an Island Rum punch or a glass of fruit punch. The resort is just a short walk from the beach and it provides views of both the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.

If you want a quicker getaway to Frigate Bay, ELeisurelink (tel. 888/801-8808; www.eleisurelink.com) is offering a three-night stay with round-trip airfare from Newark airport from $578 per person; all taxes are included. The search dates used were May 29-June 1. Flights are on American Airlines and the room is described as a hillside room with two double beds, although you can change your room type.

The Ocean Terrace Inn (tel. 869/465-2754; e-mail otistkitts@caribsurf.com; www.otistkitts.com) is running a "Romance Package" priced from $139 per room, based on double occupancy from now until December 14. The resort is located on the Fortlands of the island, about a quarter mile from the capital city Basseterre. The package includes accommodations in a superior room, complimentary fruit platter, breakfast for two at the onsite Waterfalls restaurant, late checkout (until 4pm), all hotel taxes and service charges. The resort features a pool with waterfalls and a Jacuzzi, set in tropical garden environment; rooms have balconies.

A search for vacation packages in St. Kitts using Liberty Travel (tel. 800/887-1006; www.libertytravel.com) revealed an all-inclusive deal priced from $407 per person, for travel in early June at Ottley's Plantation Inn. It's a consistent winner of the AAA 4-diamond award and the package includes three nights of accommodations, round-trip airport transfers. The price reflects a standard room with a queen bed with either ocean and/or garden view.
