San Antonio, often called "the crown jewel of Texas" by its fans, wants to keep up the flow of travelers to this intriguing place, by offering, for the 12th year running, a coupon book which they say can save you up to $2,000, should you take advantage of all the offers therein. The book is free and can be had for the asking by phoning their 800 number or going to their Web site, or by just picking it up at more than one thousand locations in the city's metropolitan area.
The sponsors include SeaWorld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, American Express, Advantage Rent-a-Car, 36 different hotels and 16 visitor attractions.
Among the selections that caught my eye are the following, which appear to be good bargains:
Hotel rooms on the fabled Riverwalk from just $99 as follows: The Westin (subject to availability), La Mansion, the Holiday Inn Riverwalk and Hawthorn Inn & Suites Riverwalk (the latter three Sunday through Thursday nights only). These last three offer weekend rooms (Friday and Saturday nights from $109 (Hawthorn Inn), from $119 (La Mansion) and from $129 (Holiday Inn).
Not on the Riverwalk, and in some cases, a fairly good distance away, you can find hotel rooms from $59.95 and up midweek, $69.99 on weekends.
At Fiesta Texas Six Flags, there are five coupons, ranging from a next-day-free offer to a free adult ticket as part of a twofer (Wednesdays through Fridays only), to free admission for kids with a paid general admission ticket and a seniors ticket for just $18 plus tax. As the regular adult general admission is $35.99 plus tax, $10 off is pretty good. The kids (over 3, usually) price is $21.99, and the senior regular fare is $24.99.
SeaWorld's usual general admission price is $36.99 plus tax, so getting $8 off with a coupon is worthwhile, and there is also a next-day-free coupon, and a four-ticket package for $105. Since a kids ticket is $26.99, the savings for two adults and two kids in this case would be $22.96, not counting tax.
And if you use your American Express, you can get up to a 20% savings on food at nine different restaurants, two of them right on Riverwalk (Rio Rio Cantina for Mexican cuisine and Zuni Grill for Southwestern fare).
