If quiet is what you’re looking for, look no further than this off-shoot of a Portuguese chain. With only four rooms per floor, and rooms overlooking a serene side street, the hotel gets high marks for sleepability (beds are quality, too). And though small, rooms are efficiently designed with good storage, hooks instead of closets, large windows and fun bedspreads that are embroidered with some of the symbols of the city (from the Statue of Liberty to a slice of pizza). Corner rooms have balconies, and higher ones have nice views.

Health-conscious guests should know that while the hotel doesn't have a fitness room, it does offer free passes to the full-service Blink Fitness nearby. It's much better equipped than most hotel gyms anyway. Breakfast at the Pestana is "grab-and-go" in a room off the lobby. Among the items you can grab: pastries, bagels and very good espresso and cappuccinos.

And if you have weird dreams here, you can head across the street to the Jung Center for help with interpretation.
