In addition to the area's excellent archaeological sites, attractions here include the Four Corners Monument, the only place in the United States where you can stand in four states at once. Operated by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department (tel. 928/871-6647; www.navajonationparks.org), there's a flat monument marking where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona meet, and visitors perch for photos. The official seals of the four states are displayed, along with the motto "Four states here meet in freedom under God." Surrounding the monument are the states' flags, flags of the Navajo Nation and Ute tribe, and the U.S. flag.
A visitor center has crafts demonstrations by Navajo artisans, and jewelry, pottery, sand paintings, and other crafts are for sale. In addition, traditional Navajo food, such as fry bread, is available. The monument is located half a mile northwest of U.S. 160, about 40 miles southwest of Cortez. It's open daily from 7am to 8pm in summer and 8am to 5pm the rest of the year. Admission costs $5 per person over age 6, and cash only is accepted. Allow 30 minutes.
