Around the lake you'll find a few shops for clothing and souvenirs. New on the scene is Deep Creek Sweets, 1550 Deep Creek Dr., at the Fort in McHenry (tel. 301/387-7979), stocked with locally made chocolates and fudge.
A few places in outlying areas of Deep Creek Lake are worth a stop. Schoolhouse Earth, 1224 Friendsville Rd., north of the lake off Route 42 (tel. 301/746-8603; www.schoolhouseearth.com), specializes in country accessories, gourmet food, jewelry, and home and garden decor. It's open daily from 10am to 6pm.
In Oakland, the Book Mark'et & Antique Mezzanine, 111 S. Second St. (tel. 301/334-8778), has children's books, fiction, history, and biography, as well as antiques and collectibles. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30am to 5:30 or 6pm, Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
Located 8 miles south of Oakland on U.S. Route 219, just past the intersection of U.S. Route 50, is the 1,200-square-foot Red House School Antiques (tel. 301/334-2800). It carries antiques and crafts. It's open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm, Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
