In West Sound the Kingfish Dining Room (formerly Westsound Café), at Deer Harbor Road and Crow Valley Road (tel. 360/376-4440; www.kingfishinn.com), housed in a former general store and with a great view of the water, serves the best fish and chips on the island. The deck here is great at sunset. Housed in a little cottage in Eastsound, The Kitchen, 249 Prune Alley (tel. 360/376-6958), is my favorite spot on the island for healthy light meals. This place isn't strictly vegetarian, but it does lots of great Asian-inspired wraps and rice-and-noodle dishes. In summer, The Kitchen is open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 7pm; hours are shorter in other months. Other good places in Eastsound for a quick bite include Chez Chloé, North Beach Road in Eastsound Square (tel. 360/376-6896; www.chezchloe.com), which is a great place for breakfast or lunch, and Enzo's Italian Caffe, 365 North Beach Rd. (tel. 360/376-8057), which serves gelato, espresso, pastries, and sandwiches. If you just need some wine for a picnic, head to Country Corner Cellars, 837 Crescent Beach Dr. (tel. 360/376-6907; www.countrycornercellars.com), which is behind the gas station just east of Eastsound.
Good Food at the Odd Fellows Hall -- Eastsound's Odd Fellows Hall, 112 Haven Rd. (tel. 360/376-5640; www.oddshall.org), a block off Main Street on the road to picturesque Madrona Point, has for many years been a starting point for creative Orcas Island cooks. From year to year, you never know what sort of restaurant you'll find here in this historic building, but it's almost always good and a well-guarded local secret. In summer 2007, great Thai food was served on Thursday and Friday.
