Overlooking the mouth of the Fal River, St. Mawes is sheltered from northern winds, and subtropical plants can grow here. From the town quay, you can take a boat to Frenchman's Creek and Helford River, as well as other places. St. Mawes is noted for its sailing, boating, fishing, and yachting, and half a dozen sandy coves lie within a 15-minute drive from the port. The town, built on the Roseland Peninsula, makes for scenic walks because of its colorful cottages and sheltered harbor.
