Getting There -- I-81 heads north from the New York State Thruway, passing through Watertown straight up to the Thousand Islands Bridge, which crosses to Canada. Watertown itself, 30 miles to the south, is the closest city to the region, but it's served only by Adirondack Trailways (tel. 800/776-7548). The bus terminal is at 540 State St. Syracuse is the nearest big city, so the major airport in the area is Syracuse Hancock International (tel. 315/454-4330), about 90 miles south, and serviced by American Eagle (tel. 800/433-7300), Continental (tel. 800/525-0280), Delta (tel. 800/221-1212), JetBlue (tel. 800/538-2583), Northwest (tel. 800/225-2525), United Express (tel. 800/241-6522), and US Airways (tel. 800/428-4322). Visitor Information -- The 1000 Islands Welcome Center, 43373 Collins Landing, Alexandria Bay (tel. 800/847-5263 or 315/482-2520; www.visit1000islands.com), is your informational hub, conveniently located next to the Thousand Islands Bridge. It's open daily from May to October 8am to 6pm, and from November to April, Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm.

Getting Around -- I-81 passes right through the heart of the region, crossing into Canada over the Thousand Islands Bridge. For the scenic route, take Route 12 as far north as Morristown, or merge onto Route 12E as it hugs the coast south from Clayton.
