Visitor Information

A one-stop source for regional information is the Blue Ridge Travel Association Visitor Center, 975 Tazewell St., Wytheville, VA 24382 (tel. 800/446-9670 or 276/223-3355; www.virginiablueridge.org), which shares space with the Wytheville Convention and Visitors Bureau. It offers brochures from all towns in the region. The center is open daily from 8am to 5pm. Take Exit 70 off I-81 and follow the signs.

Getting There & Getting Around

As is true in most parts of Virginia, traveling by car is the only way to go. Truck-infested I-81 runs the entire length of the highlands and is its major thoroughfare. U.S. 11 follows I-81, and the Blue Ridge Parkway parallels it to the east. I-77 cuts north-south through the center of the region (the section from Wytheville north to Bluefield, West Virginia, is one of America's most scenic interstates). Otherwise, most byways in the region are mountain roads -- narrow, winding, and sometimes steep -- so give yourself ample time to reach your destination.

The area's air gateway is Roanoke Regional Airport. The nearest Amtrak (tel. 800/872-7245; www.amtrak.com) stations are in Lynchburg and Clifton Forge, each about 50 miles from Roanoke.
