There’s an in-joke that Austinites tell about how to entertain visiting family and friends. At some point in discussing sightseeing plans, someone is bound to ask, “So when are you taking them to San Antonio?”

It’s not that Austin doesn’t have places of interest to travelers. There are plenty of great historic sights and abundant outdoor activities, though some of the latter can only be enjoyed seasonally. It’s just that a taste of genuine Austin is less about standard sightseeing, more about absorbing the city’s vibe. Thus this 3-day itinerary is geared toward those who want to experience the best of what Austin has to offer, including lifestyle activities in addition to typical tourist attractions. Many of the stops are low-cost or free, though several offer the opportunity to drop a lot of money. That’s true too of the separate itinerary designed for those traveling with kids.

Note: Austin’s attractions are fairly spread out. Because you’re going to be packing a lot into your 3 days, driving is generally your best option, though it’s not always ideal. See Planning a Trip for more details about parking and getting around Austin.
