Planning a TripGetting There From Christchurch, follow State Highway 75 to Akaroa, passing through Halswell Village and Little River, up over the hills and down around Akaroa Harbour. Two shuttle companies operate regularly from Christchurch. Akaroa French Connection (tel. 0800/800-575 in NZ, or 03/366-4556; www.akaroabus.co.nz) has daily departures from Christchurch Visitor Centre and a complimentary pickup service from inner city accommodations. They charge NZ$49 round-trip. The Akaroa Shuttle (tel. 0800/500-929; www.akaroashuttle.co.nz) charges NZ$45 per person round-trip (cash only) for the direct shuttle service. Both make the 1-hour trip daily, and both also offer scenic tours; reservations are essential. Visitor Information The Akaroa Visitor Centre is in the old post office building, 80 Rue Lavaud (tel./fax 03/304-8600; www.akaroa.com). It's open daily in summer 9am to 5pm; and in winter, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and weekends 10am to 4pm.
