But if you truly want to get away from it all, stay at one of my favorite old country homes, Rowandale Homestead, 894 Okains Bay, Banks Peninsular (www.rowandalehomestead.co.nz; tel. 03/304-8615). It's 20 minutes from Akaroa, and with rates of just NZ$165 to NZ$295 and some of the best food and hospitality in a unique setting, it's a must-stay in my view. Hostess Angela Thacker will spoil you with fresh, organic produce straight from her large garden. Beyond those recommended here, Akaroa now has umpteen lovely accommodations offerings.
