Review of CengelhanStanding at the center of what was a major commercial crossroad during the 16th and 17th centuries is this recently restored caravansaray, originally built for the daughter of Süleyman the Magnificent. The restoration, led by the ubiquitous Turkish tycoon, Rahmi Koç, was surely a labor of love. Although a major meeting place for commercial and social goings-on in its heyday, the place was in veritable ruins by the time Koç's father opened up a shop on the ground floor in 1917. The inn now houses thematic exhibits such as engineering, road transport, scientific instrumentation, medicine, and maritime pursuits. Many are interactive and should appeal particularly to fans of The Way Things Work. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
