Frommer's Review
Note: The resort will be closing for renovations July 2008.
This sybaritic retreat has a celebrity-and-CEO crowd that can afford its expensive rates. It occupies a 132-hectare (326-acre) offshore island. Boats depart from the Antiguan "mainland" every hour from 7am to midnight daily. You can preregister for the 3km (2-mile) ride on the Antiguan side. With secluded white-sand beaches along a coastline protected by coral reefs, the grounds have been handsomely planted with loblolly and white cedar.
Guests are coddled and pampered in a way that only Curtain Bluff tops. A haven for naturalists, the resort features Pasture Bay Beach on the island's windward side, home to endangered species of turtles, rare birds, and sheep. All the accommodations are frequently refurbished, including a 12-unit Mediterranean-style complex, two- and three-bedroom luxury villas, and several spacious private manor houses. Following a US$5.6-million renovation, completed in 2006, the resort is looking fresher than ever, with upgraded rooms and suites. Beds are luxurious, as are the spacious marble-and-tile bathrooms with tubs. Only the bedrooms within the suites are air-conditioned. In light of the constant trade winds, no one seems to mind.
For breakfast and lunch, it's casual fare at the open-air Beach Pavilion. Dinner is at the Veranda Restaurant, the signature restaurant in the 230-year-old English plantation manor. Dinner Sunday night is an upscale beachfront barbecue. Imaginative and well-prepared dishes are inspired by Europe, America, and the Caribbean.
