Frommer's Review
This is still the best place to chill out in luxury, even after being taken over by Elite Island resorts and turned into an all-inclusive. It has none of that toga-party hysteria associated by such lesser all-inclusives as Sandals. Though movie stars are no longer photographed topless on the hotel beach (as Greta Garbo once was), the resort still has an aura of exclusivity. The Gauguin-inspired Tahitian-style rentals are laid-back, but classically elegant. These intimate rooms open onto 16 secluded hectares (40 acres) of beachfront gardens, a bird sanctuary, and a lagoon, with the biggest draw, of course, being 1.2km (3/4 mile) of white-sand beach. Choose among beachfront bungalows, the more romantic Gauguin rondavels (tikilike huts) with thatch roofs, or deluxe accommodations and suites in the two-story wings. The Italian marble bathrooms with shower are part of the allure. Dining is among the best on the island either in the Sea Grape or the Gauguin Restaurant, the latter more intimate and casual, located at the beach.
