Nightlife

Because of its relatively small population (around 50,000), Arles doesn't offer as many nightlife options as Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Nice, or Marseille. The town's most appealing choice is the bar-cafe-music hall Le Cargo de Nuit, 7 av. Sadi-Carnot (tel. 04-90-49-55-99; www.cargodenuit.com). Open Wednesday to Saturday night, it's a club that later has live music -- salsa, jazz, rock 'n' roll, whatever -- and then disco dancing until 3am. Cover ranges from 8€ to 23€ ($10-$30).

The town's most animated cafe, where most singles go, is Le Café van Gogh, 11 place du Forum (tel. 04-90-96-44-56). Overlooking an attractive plaza, it features live music and an ambience that the almost-young and the restless refer to as super-chouette, or "super cool."
