Owned and operated by a fourth-generation Astorian fishermen, Clemente’s is an excellent restaurant for, not surprisingly, fresh seafood. The food here is cooked from scratch and there is nothing gimmicky about it; I personally like places that still serve old-fashioned favorites like shrimp cocktail or crab louis. For a really satisfying lunch, I would recommend the fresh fish sandwiches; the oyster and halibut are served on chewy rustic bread with non-greasy fries and house-made catsup. The fish and chips here are renowned, made from your choice of freshly caught halibut, salmon, cod, or oysters. Clemente’s is very much a local institution. It’s friendly, unpretentious, and welcomes kids. In nice (windless) weather you can sit out beside the river and watch the ships go by.
