At the Sign of the Angel

The rooms at this inn, built in the 14th century, are quiet and split between the main building and a 17th-century garden cottage, whose rooms we prefer because they are more spacious and have more style. Each guest room is distinctly decorated with a host of antiques. One room has a magnificently carved Spanish bed that is said to have belonged to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the famous railway and canal builder. Some rooms in the main building are standard and rather small, others are more spacious -- no. 12, for example, has a four-poster bed, and no. 3 is a generously sized superior room with a very large bed. Bathrooms have adequate shelf space and a tub or shower.
