Frommer's Review
Dating from 1826, this is the jewel in Northern Ireland's crown of pubs. Opposite the Europa Hotel and the Grand Opera House, this gas-lit old alehouse has what many architecture buffs believe to be the finest example of Victorian Gothic decor in the country. Owned by the National Trust and run by Bass Ireland, it has it all: stained-glass windows, pounded tin ceiling, elaborate tile floor, etched and smoked glass dividing the wooden cubicle seating, a beveled mirror with floral and wildlife decorations, scalloped lamps, and a long bar with inlaid colored glass and marble trim. Don't even get me started on the gorgeous mosaic exterior. The 10 dark-wood private rooms are guarded by mythological beasts with shields. There are gunmetal plates for striking matches, little windows to peep discreetly through, and an antique system of bells that once summoned service. .
