Restaurants in Belfast
A prominent British journalist tells the story of ordering a fried breakfast in Belfast, sometime in the 1970s. “No sausage,” he asked the waitress. When his food arrived, there were sausages on the plate. He sent it back, asking again for no sausage. But back it came, with sausages still there. “But I said no sausages,” he complained. “Chef says sausage is compulsory,” came the taciturn reply. These days the Belfast dining scene is, happily, much more cosmopolitan. The number of top restaurants in the city seems to grow every year, from funky gastropubs to chic fine dining.

Beatrice Kennedy
This great little find in the heart of the University Quarter is great for traditional Irish cooking with a few modern flourishes. The dining room is quirky and small; maybe a little too much so, especially when it gets busy. You might start with some squid or perhaps scallops in a…$$Around Town - Mexican
Boojum
Lines have been known to stretch way down the street at busy times for this jaunty, no-frills emporium, where the food is excellent and fresh as can be. The menu is pretty simple—just choose from burritos, tacos, fajitas or salad, then your main meat or veg ingredients, and one of…$Around Town - International
Buskers
We estimate that you will leave this place feeling an appreciable percentage cooler than when you went in. A favorite hangout of students from nearby Queen’s University, Busker’s calls itself “musically inclined,” which is clear enough from the vintage-style murals of Bowie and…$$Around Town - Modern European/International
CoCo
Coco’s stylishly whimsical dining room is plastered in modern art along with posters and photo-collages that set the tone. The contemporary menu is full of welcome surprises that innovate without overcrowding the more traditional ingredients; an appetizer of goat’s cheese ravioli is…$$$Around Town - Seafood
Deane’s Seafood Bar
Michael Deane is something of a local celebrity chef, and he’s certainly come to dominate the Belfast dining scene. Deane’s, his flagship, formal restaurant on Howard Street, still serves very good Irish-French cuisine, although the adjacent Seafood Bar is equally good, and (even…$$Around Town - Seafood
Deanes Love Fish (Etc.)
Deep breath here, because this review is six rolled into one. The mini-empire run by local celebrity chef Michael Deane has so far expanded to half a dozen restaurants; while each has its charms, Deanes Love Fish is probably our favorite. Adjacent to Eipic (028/9033-1134), Deane’s…$$Around Town - Modern Irish
James Street South
One of Belfast’s leading restaurants, James Street South has built a great reputation on creative, modern Irish cuisine. With exposed brick walls and an industrial-chic vibe, the place may look unpretentious, but the food is outstanding—dishes such Dundrum crab with a bisque…$$$Around Town - Seafood

Mourne Seafood Bar
This is one of the best places in Belfast for top-quality seafood. The dining room has a casual air—this is a seafood bar after all—but the food speaks for itself. Oysters are a specialty, served traditionally with Tabasco and lemon or in more elaborate ways, such as with pickled…$$Around Town - Modern European
Ox
Contemporary, seasonal, well-balanced flavors form the small but sumptuous menus at this Michelin-starred restaurant. The tasting menus change constantly, with local and seasonal availability a constant priority, but expect dishes such as a piquant tomato, onion, and black-garlic…$$$ - Irish/International
The Barking Dog
There’s something quintessentially Belfast about this place—quirky, artsy, lively, but ultimately no-nonsense. The dining room has a funky pub feel, with exposed brick walls and old candelabras balanced on battered wood tables. If you sit in the front garden, you’re separated from…$$Around Town - Irish/International
The John Hewitt
Near the Belfast Cathedral, this atmospheric bar is a popular hangout with locals. The gastropub-style lunch menu is a real crowd-pleaser—soup of the day with crusty bread, haddock and chips, cheese and onion tarts, and so on. After lunch service, the menu shifts to nibbles and…$Around Town
