Engaging holography displays and robots are the hallmarks of the MIT Museum, where you'll also find works in more conventional media, such as kinetic sculpture. But the focus isn't art -- it's the role of science and technology in society, explored through practical applications such as medical devices and gorgeous documents such as historic architectural plans. Little kids aren't the target audience, but middle-schoolers and their older siblings will have a blast with activities and programs geared to them. Be sure to check out the entertaining gift shop.
Tip: The List Visual Arts Center (tel. 617/253-4680; http://web.mit.edu/lvac), home to MIT's contemporary art collections, is about 5 minutes away -- and it's free. Head to the Wiesner Building, 20 Ames St. (btw. Main and Amherst sts.), Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 6pm, until 8pm on Thursday.
