Hamersley's Bistro ReviewA beloved special-occasion restaurant and neighborhood favorite, Hamersley's put the South End on Boston's culinary map. It opened in 1987 but feels as fresh as the local ingredients all over the menu, which changes seasonally. The dining room has an open kitchen (the tall guy in the Red Sox cap is owner Gordon Hamersley) and lots of sound-muffling soft surfaces, a perfect combination of showy and comfortable -- which also describes the vegetarian-friendly food. Deceptively simple roast chicken with garlic, lemon, and parsley is deservedly famous, and I'd cheerfully eat New England bouillabaisse -- clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, and haddock in out-of-this-world broth -- every night. For meat-eaters, veal osso buco braised in white wine with celery root, mushrooms, lemon, and rosemary is a gorgeous combination of flavors. Desserts are among the best in town -- try the lemon custard soufflé. The enthusiastic, professional staff can help navigate the excellent wine list. There's seasonal outdoor seating. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
