This family-owned chain enjoys a well-deserved international reputation for serving only the freshest, best-quality fish and shellfish, processed at its own state-of-the-art plant. No, it's not a secret insider tip -- it's better. The menu includes regular selections (haddock, salmon, shrimp, calamari, and lobster, among others) plus whatever looked good that morning, and it's all splendid. The chowders -- both clam and fish -- are justly famous. Entrees run from grilled fish served plain or with Cajun spices (try the arctic char) to cioppino, an aquarium's worth of seafood in tomato broth. Or splurge on a mammoth lobster. For dessert, the Boston cream pie is so good that you might come back just for that. And the wine list is exceptional -- a wine journalist friend tells me it's the best restaurant-chain list in the country. At press time, Legal's was about to open a new flagship location on the waterfront at Liberty Wharf, off Northern Avenue (at D St.) in the Seaport District, South Boston.
