Frommer's Review
Three brick 19th-century buildings make up this relatively small hotel, which offers excellent service and features that make it competitive with larger rivals. It's popular with business travelers who want a break from more convention-oriented hotels, as well as with vacationers who appreciate the boutique atmosphere and access to the adjacent spa.
The hotel launched a $14 million upgrade in 2007; check ahead to ensure that you're as far as possible from ongoing work during your stay. Guest rooms vary in size; post-overhaul, they'll have custom cherry furniture and fluffy duvets as well as new bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. Half of the units have French doors that open onto small private balconies; the plushest rooms are good-size suites with working fireplaces or Jacuzzis. Soundproofing throughout allows views of Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Haymarket, or the construction above the Big Dig without the accompanying noise. My favorite units are on the glass-enclosed top floor.
