Frommer's Review

Tucked away in a quiet side street in a residential Óbuda neighborhood, the Kisbuda Gyöngye ("Pearl of Little Buda") is favored by Hungarians and visitors alike. The restaurant has its origins in a building that stood not far away called Kisbuda, built in the 14th century, which was transformed into a bar and artists' hub of sorts by Alice Mezodi and her musician husband József Mezodi of the classic Hungarian rock band Apostol. When Kisbuda was closed in 1992, the founders created this heir, the Kisbuda Gyöngye. The heavy yet warm wooden interior was created from odd antique furniture, bed-boards and such. The hand-painted mural on the ceiling was impressive, and you are sure to enjoy the highly entertaining pianist who adds to the early-19th-century, intimate atmosphere. During the summer this cozy restaurant also features an interior garden shaded by a wonderful old, gnarly tree. The gourmet menu features a delightful palette of standard Hungarian and international offerings. Try the marvelous pâte' de foie gras-plate for a starter, then indulge into the savory deer steak with apple sauce.
