Frommer's Review
Coffeehouse culture is ingrained in Budapest history; this coffeehouse is one of the historic places where writers and artists gathered. Today it is a perfect replica of the original establishment, which opened in 1887. Although there is a superb restaurant here as well, the menu is limited, making it best known as a coffeehouse. Restored by one of Hungary's own millionaires, Imre Somodyt, to its former richness, it is a hotspot, not only for tourists, but also for locals. With its perfect location, it is always busy with a mix of tourists, businessmen, locals, and local celebrities coming in for a pastry or meal. In the room at the right, at the right-hand corner of the smoking section, there is a table perpetually reserved for local writer Géza Csemer. He happened to be there on our visit, and it was confirmed by the waitstaff. While mellowing in this coffeehouse's calm green interior with lavishly attractive ceilings, and brass hanging lamps with glass shades, you can browse the free copies of various newspapers over a coffee and a fresh croissant. A simple espresso at Centrál costs 420 Ft ($1.83/95p), but for the ambience it is worth the price. If you order a torta, a piece of cake after 10pm, you will receive a 30% discount on it.
