Review of Erkel Színház (Erkel Theater)This theater was closed as of May 31, 2007, but we felt it should stay as a listing here as a historical note. Coincidently, we were at the very last performance, a dance event, and had no idea at the time that it would be our last to visit. It seems it is in such a state of disrepair that tearing it down is far more cost-effective than remodeling it. Named the "People's Opera," the Erkel Theater was the second home of the State Opera and Ballet. It was the largest theater in Hungary seating up to 2,400 people. Originally, it was built in Art Nouveau style in 1911; various renovations made it look like another Soviet-era monstrosity. If you want to see a token of Budapest history while it lasts, go for a visit. It most likely will be there through 2009 according to the last word published. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
