This tiny upstairs shop, just off Blaha Lujza tér, is practically the only shop in town (with the exception of Toys Anno, reviewed below) that has been able to withstand the relentless onslaught of international chains. The products here are all sorts of handcrafted pipe-cleaner animals. Several display windows on the street give you an idea of what's available. In our opinion, the best animals here are clearly the monkeys, which one enthusiastic 42-year-old American collector that we know has been buying in great quantities since he first came to Hungary almost 15 years ago. The snakes are also great; watch the cashier give each one an expert twist before putting it into your bag. Incidentally, we have discovered that these pipe-cleaner animals make great cat toys, too.
There is a second Rokiland store just off Váci utca in central Pest, at V. Petofi Sándor u. 3 (tel. 1/317-3131). Both shops are open Monday through Friday 10am to 6pm.
