The gorgeous Albright-Knox is one of Buffalo's can't-miss attractions, a treasure-trove of 5,000 works that should attract more attention than it does. This Greek Revival building, with 18 dramatic marble columns on its facade, dates to 1905 and nabs some exhibits that don't even make it to New York City. The Albright has recently intensified its efforts to sell older works and buy more contemporary art, which fit in well at the museum's newer wing that opened in 1962. Gauguin, Picasso, Pollock, de Kooning, and Warhol are all represented in the permanent collection, while some artists of the moment and cutting-edge photographers are shown here as well. The collection is well organized and not overwhelming, but plan on at least a half-day here -- and lunch in the excellent cafe.
