The Inn at Shelburne Farms ReviewThe numbers behind this elaborate mansion on the shores of Lake Champlain tell the story: 60 rooms, 10 chimneys, 1,400 acres. It's a tourist attraction in and of itself (and there's an admission charge to the extensive farms on the property). Yet you can sleep here and pretend it's all yours. Built in 1899, the sprawling Edwardian "farmhouse" is a place to fantasize about the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Noted architect Frederick Law Olmsted helped shape the grounds, and the guest rooms vary in decor and upkeep -- many have day beds. If you're feeling flush, rent Overlook, the original master bedroom of owner Lila Webb; it has frilly draperies, a big king bed, and great views of the lake, meadows, and grounds. The Louis XVI room was furnished with whitewashed furniture in 1899, and it's still here. Some budget units have shared bathrooms, of which the Oak Room is best. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
