Walking & Boat Tours
From Easter to early November, daily guided tours of Canterbury are organized by the Guild of Guides (tel. 01227/459779; www.canterbury-walks.co.uk), costing £4.50 ($9) for adults, £4 ($8) students and seniors, £3 ($6) for children 11 and younger, and £15 ($30) for a family ticket. The cold stones of Canterbury take on new life as you take this tour, often conducted by witty and insightful guides. Meet at the Tourist Information Centre at 34 St. Margaret's St., in a pedestrian area opposite the cathedral. In 2009 tours leave July 2 to September 8 Monday to Saturday at 11:30am and 2pm; September 10 to October 28 and April 1 to July 1 Monday to Saturday at 2pm. On Sundays year-round tours leave at 2pm.
From just below the Weavers House, boats leave for half-hour trips on the river with commentary on the history of the buildings you pass. We recommend these boat tours, even if you've taken the walking tour. They can be a lot of fun, and you get to see Canterbury from a different perspective -- that is, from the water. Admission costs £6 ($12) for adults, £5 ($10) for seniors and students, and £4 ($8) for children. Tours leave April to October daily 10am to 5pm, with departures every 15 to 20 minutes. Horseback Riding
The Bursted Manor Riding Centre in Pett Bottom (tel. 01227/830568; www.burstedmanor.co.uk) is open Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 6pm. The last lesson is at 6pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. A 1-hour group lesson or hack ride is available for £39 ($78). The location is 4.5km (2 3/4 miles) southeast of Canterbury.
