Psitopoleio ("The Grill")

Known to the foreign community of Chania as the Meatery, this is not for the fainthearted (or vegetarians!). Its clientele is almost 100% Cretan. I debated for years whether to include this place, but eventually decided that some travelers will appreciate its distinctive ambience. To call its decor "basic" is a major understatement: It is a long, bare space, with the butcher's block at the rear and the grill at the front. Your meat course is butchered at the former and cooked at the latter. The specialties are lamb chops, pork chops, kidneys, spareribs, and sausages; excellent french fries; salads, both the standard Greek and a cabbage version; soup; and tzatziki. House wine, beer, and soft drinks help you wash down the tasty and unforgettable food. Go for it!
