The Best Inns and Bed & Breakfasts

Two Sisters Inn (Manitou Springs; tel. 800/274-7466 or 719/685-9684): Built by two sisters in 1919 as a boarding house, this splendid bed-and-breakfast has been owned and operated by Wendy Goldstein and Sharon Smith, sisters in spirit if not in blood. The four bedrooms and separate honeymoon cottage are furnished with family heirlooms and photographs, in a style best described as informal elegance.

The Leland House Bed & Breakfast Suites (Durango; tel. 800/664-1920 or 970/385-1920): Built as an apartment house in 1927 and handsomely restored in 1993, the Leland House offers an intriguing mix of lodging types in a comfortable inn with early-20th-century decor. Breakfast is served in the historic Rochester Hotel across the street, another restored gem under the same ownership.

The Bradley (Boulder; tel. 800/858-5811 or 303/545-5200): Built as an upscale inn in 1994, the Bradley nicely blends into the surrounding historic neighborhood, just northeast of the Pearl Street Mall. The striking Great Room and uniquely decorated guest rooms are all adorned with bold contemporary art from local galleries.
