Hotels

You'll find a wide range of lodging possibilities here, from Colorado's ritziest resort -- The Broadmoor -- to basic budget motels. There are also several particularly nice bed-and-breakfasts. The rates listed are the officially quoted prices ("rack rates") and don't take into account individual or group discounts. Generally, rates are highest from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and lowest in the spring. During graduation and other special events at the Air Force Academy, rates can increase markedly, and you may have trouble finding a room at any price. Rates listed do not include the lodging tax (about 9% in Colorado Springs, almost 10% in Manitou Springs).

In addition to the accommodations described, a number of moderately priced chain and franchise motels offer reliable lodging. These include the economical Best Western Pikes Peak Inn, 3010 N. Chestnut St., Colorado Springs, CO 80907 (tel. 800/223-9127 or 719/636-5201), which charges $59 to $89 double; Econo Lodge Downtown, 714 N. Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903 (tel. 800/553-2666 or 719/636-3385), with rates from $35 to $85 double; the attractive and well-maintained Rodeway Inn & Suites Garden of the Gods, 555 W. Garden of the Gods Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80907 (tel. 800/828-4347 or 719/593-9119), with rates for two of $61 to $106; and Super 8, near Garden of the Gods at 4604 Rusina Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80907 (tel. 800/800-8000 or 719/594-0964), which charges $45 to $65 double.

Those looking for a more upscale chain won't go wrong with the Doubletree Hotel World Arena, 1775 E. Cheyenne Mountain Blvd. (I-25, exit 138), Colorado Springs, CO 80906 (tel. 800/222-TREE or 719/576-8900); or the Sheraton Colorado Springs Hotel, 2886 S. Circle Dr. (I-25, exit 138), Colorado Springs, CO 80906 (tel. 800/981-4012 or 719/576-5900).

Family-Friendly Hotels

The Broadmoor -- A lake and pool area with a terrific water slide, plus tennis, golf, riding stables, and a great summer kids' program that includes a visit to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo all add up to a wonderful family experience.

Sheraton Colorado Springs Hotel -- Two swimming pools, a separate children's pool, shuffleboard, and a putting green should keep most kids occupied.
