Plaza Hotel Curaçao

Standing guard over the Punda side of Saint Anna Bay, right in the heart of Willemstad, the 14-story Plaza is nestled in the ramparts of an 18th-century waterside fort on the eastern tip of the harbor entrance. As one of the harbor's two "lighthouses," the hotel has to carry marine collision insurance -- it's the only hotel in the Caribbean with that distinction. The original part of the hotel was built in 1954, and retains a 1950s look with a quirky lobby complete with a fishpond, enormous rotating ceiling fans, and an open-air terrace next to the small pool. There's also a tower of rooms stacked 15 stories high. Each of the smallish bedrooms is comfortably furnished and contains a small tub/shower combo. The pool, with a bar and sun-tanning area, is inches away from the parapet of the fort. The Waterfort Restaurant serves standard American and Continental dishes.
