The Palazzo dei Diamanti, another jewel of Este splendor, is so named because of the 9,000 diamond-shaped stones on its facade. Of the handful of museums here, the National Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca Nazionale) is the most important. It houses the works of the Ferrarese artists -- notably the trio of old masters, Tura, del Cossa, and Roberti. The collection covers the chief period of artistic expression in Ferrara from the 14th to the 18th century. Next in importance is the Civic Gallery of Modern Art (Museo Civico d'Arte Moderna), which sponsors the most important contemporary art exhibits in town. The other three museums in the palazzo aren't really worth your time.
