Hennickehammars Herrgård

There's no contest: This is the best place to stay in the area. Check in after you shake off the mining dust. Built in 1722 as the home of a wealthy landowner, this hotel close to the edge of Lake Hemtjärn, 4km (2 1/2 miles) south of Filipstad, is a comfortable country spot loaded with personality and charm. Rooms are either in one of several outbuildings or in the main manor house itself, with its elegant detailing and symmetrical facade. The rooms in the outbuildings are comfortable, but we always request the more antique accommodations in the original building. All the units, new or old, are stylishly comfortable thanks to renovation. Guests can swim in the lake, rent horses at a nearby riding school, play tennis, or enjoy golf at a course about 15km (9 1/3 miles) away.

The best dining in and around Filipstad is found at the hotel restaurant.
